Is a 2002 YZ 250 good for Motorcross Racing?

Im 19, I ride dirt bikes an street bikes, i want to get in to motocross an i want to race a yz250. Now in CA theres a red sticker for anything over the year 2002 (dirtbikes) and i wanted a newer bike but dont want to be limited to where i can use it.
so i dunno tips suggestions anything?
Im about 165 – 175 pounds i can easily drop that and 6 foot tall
