What’s the best value for an amateur automotive mechanic (DIY) tool set?

Posted by Lexus Fast | Automotive Tools | Sunday 28 December 2008 12:30 pm

tonymonton
I hear it’s better to buy a set, rather than run back and forth to buy tools as needed. Also cheaper. I’m starting to do my own car repairs. I have 2 bmws, 1999 323i and a 2005 X5 3.0i. So, what’s the best deal on a tool set and box?

How about jacking equipment? My garage only fits one car, and only about 19″ of clearance around if the X5 rear is up against the garage door. I hear it’s not too safe to work in such a small garage. Any suggestions for extra safety for working in this garage? Thanks.

Has the price of tools gone up in the past 6 months?

It seems like the cost of automotive tools has increased 50% in the past 6 months….is this just my eyes tricking me? Starter kits are now $500 as opposed to $250

Okay, i was looking to buy/invest in a good tool set. I was thinking snap on. But i could not decide if i should get the US snap on set or the metric set. I think somewhere i heard that even amercian cars are switching the the metric side. Which set should i get and why? I work on all cars… Chevy, Ford, Toyota, Acura, Mitsubishi and so on. Please give me your feedback.

Is a stick welder much better for automotive bodywork than a wire welder?

Posted by Lexus Fast | Automotive Tools | Friday 26 December 2008 1:59 am

Biff
I bought a pretty cheap Campbell wire welder and it seems like it’s the wrong tool for the job. Ugly, spotty, messy welds that don’t hold well. Then again, maybe I’m just a n00B. Even if it’s my low skill level, would a stick welder be better anyway?

automotive assembly line jobs?

Posted by Lexus Fast | Automotive Tools | Thursday 25 December 2008 8:08 pm

kissmystarfishpucker
I love this forum!!
I’ve passed my first interview for a position in an automotive assembly line with flying colours by a third party company who screens potential employees before they are then interviewed by the company itself.
The interviewer suggested that I look up on the interntet anything I could on automotive assembly lines and potential questions I may be asked by the Head Hunters. My work background is in aircraft electronics so I’m very familiar with tools etc…
Try as I may, I can’t find anything.
Who out there, who has experience with an automotive assembly line, can help me out, or is there someone out there who can suggest an appropriate web site?
BTW – The Company is Honda….go figure, it’s what I drive, lol.
Thanks a ton in advance for any help! Like I said, I love this forum, not a wonder Yahoo is the best out there, I should have bought shares years ago, haha.
Ford Man,
thanks for the input…I figured it was going to be a repetitive job, same thing every day till you quit…but what I’m looking for in my question is what kind of questions are the Head Hunters going to ask me so I can get a job there?

Comment please!

Which automotive repair scan tool to buy?

Posted by Lexus Fast | Automotive Tools | Thursday 25 December 2008 11:15 am

Unclebernie
I’m looking to buy a new or used automotive scan tool (not a code reader). I currently have AUTOTAP which is a fairly nice OBD-II PC based scanner but it is unidirectional (read only). I’m prepared to spend up to $3K for a bidirectional scan tool that will cover all OBD-II models- doesn’t have to cover OBD-I but would be nice.
The problem is I’m having a hella-hard time finding information, reviews, etc on all the choices. Should I buy a MAC Mentor or a Nemesys? Why or why not?

Thanks. In advance, I’d like to try and filter out as many MORONS and IDIOTS as possible because it seems this website is absolutely filled to capacity with people who have no idea what they are talking about. If you aren’t an auto tech, if you have never used a scan tool, are 16yrs old, or if your dad works at dealer then MOVE ON and let someone who actually knows what they are talking about answer the question.
Any personal recommendations supported by links to more information would be great.
Bobweb, you idiot, didn’t I JUST SAY that I wanted a BIDIRECTIONAL SCAN TOOL??? Autoxray is unidirectional.
Gosh. Idiots. This is EXACTLY why I only want people who know what they are talking about to answer.
Idiots.
Gosh.

Maybe we should require a basic automotive systems class in high school. Perhaps that would help with trusting their mechanics and certainly would make them more competent shoppers.
I am not talking about everyone, The ones I am referencing are obvious.

Which specific tools would you need to become a diesel mechanic?

Posted by Lexus Fast | Automotive Tools | Wednesday 17 December 2008 9:39 am

James P
Im currently studying to be a general mechanic but plan on continuing on to be a diesel mechanic. I’m not too sure what field i’d like to work on whether it be automotive diesel, light/medium trucks, or industrial trucks. I have an outline of what my tool set would consist of as a regular mechanic but want to start planning what I would need if I were to work the light/medium or industrial truck category. What size drive tools…. 3/4 or 1 inch? I have mostly metric sizing, to what extent would I need to invest in standard size sockets and wrenches? How much lbs. of force would I need out of my impact tools? I know there is a broad variety of specialty tools that vary by manufacturer make. Any information you have would be greatly appreciated.

what should i look for in a HVLP spray gun?

Posted by Lexus Fast | Automotive Tools | Tuesday 16 December 2008 12:38 am

EpicRacer
im going to attempt to paint my own car and wanted something a little better then using spray cans. i saw the duplicor Paint Hop series paint at autozone, which looked like it was higher grade than the spray cans.

anyway, i believe i will need an hvlp gun in order to apply these paints. what should i be looking for in a spray gun? i just need something cheap that will get the job done- i will only be using it this once. i’ll spend up to $40, ebay is crawling with these.

do these guns just hook up to any air compressor? my friend has a contractor grade compressor that i can borrow.

how does this gun look:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/_Automotive-Tools__HVLP-GRAVITY-FEED-SPRAY-GUN-GAUGE-REGULATOR-AUTO-PAINT_W0QQitemZ330243105326QQadnZAutomotiveQ20ToolsQQadiZ2871QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item330243105326&

is the only downside to an HVLP gun the fact that it will take more coats to achieve a decent finish?

what other types on guns should i look for?

IT WONT START! I own a Chevy Silverado, 4X4, 5.7L, w/ TBI carburator?

Posted by Lexus Fast | Automotive Tools | Sunday 14 December 2008 3:26 am

sondrassssssss
IT WONT START! My truck has been sitting for almost 3 yrs. I am trying to put it back on the road. The truck started for my friend about a week ago. I bitched at him to turn it off until i put new fuel and oil in it. So I bought a new battery, and replaced the oil , gas, filters. The following morning I went to start it and noticed my air cleaner was not on its bolt. I looked under the top and noticed one of the electric injector connectors was MELTED. I got 2 more and soldered the new onto the old wires as the wires didn’t look burnt at all. IT WONT START. I turned on the key. I can hear the pump in the tank start for about 2 seconds. I unscrewed the inlet fuel line at the carburetor. I have fuel at this end, none at either injector. Bought a gasket/filter kit for the TBI. IT WONT START. Poured gas in the carb. It purrs like a kitten – for a few seconds. No gas from the injectors though. Fuses are ok. Voltmeters not giving me anything from the injector plugs??! relays on the firewall? Good. In line fuse? Good. Unless I am pouring gas in the carb, SHE WONT RUN! please help, I have 2 days to move, and need my truck to do it. don’t have fancy automotive tools and computers, but I can use a wrench or socket set. I bought a Chilton, but its worthless in this case. Its times like this I miss my old ‘78′ step side! =)

Why is an automotive mechanic`s tools so expensive?

Posted by Lexus Fast | Automotive Tools | Wednesday 10 December 2008 11:50 am

Bentley
I know you need your own tools when you are a mechanic but how come the tools are so expensive? I have heard of people having to buy tools for up to $80,000. Is there a website that shows these kinds of tools? Any answer is appreciated

Comment please!

What computer is best for automotive diagnostics?

Posted by Lexus Fast | Automotive Tools | Wednesday 10 December 2008 9:42 am

99v8firebird
I’m looking for a new laptop, however, I’m not sure what would fit exactly what I need.

From what I know, diagnostic programs can be installed on operating systems (such as Windows and Mac).

I’m looking for something that I could use for college, something that would be able to do diagnostics on vehicles (I’m looking into going into automotive diagnostics, or at least in the automotive industry).

I had thought Mac may be the way to go, but I don’t know how they are as far as compatibility with a lot of automotive diagnostic tools. Also it’s so hard to find things that are compatible for Macs. I’m worried that I’ll hit a lot of walls instead of being able to easily do what I want.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

I need help with ideas for an Automotive/Car Repair themed party menu?

Posted by Lexus Fast | Automotive Tools | Monday 8 December 2008 5:11 pm

sweetymommy
I’m planning a dinner party for friends who work at a repair shop. I want to have a themed surprise menu. I think it’s called “Waldorf Hysteria?” Guests get a menu with funny items like the spoon listed as a shovel, etc. the same with food items. Then they choose from the menu. Please help me with some ideas.

Some I’ve thought up so far:
knife= screwdriver;
cracker= wheel;
rootbeer= Havoline oil;
lemonade= anti-freeze;
ice= broken windshield;
sliced olives= tires;
salad dressing= handsoap;
lettuce= cash;

I need help with more items ideas, such as:
wrench, steering wheel, engine, brakes, fuel, screws, drill, fender, lug nut, shocks, hubcap, mirror, jack, tool box, door handle, etc, etc.

I also need ideas and funny names for some main dish like chicken, mashed potatoes, or salad.
The menu is supposed to be a game. The guests don’t know what they are ordering until they get it.

I have automotive tools I’ve inherited that I’m selling. Where do I look to find what they’re worth and where

Posted by Lexus Fast | Automotive Tools | Wednesday 3 December 2008 11:13 pm

I inherited my dad’s old school automotive repair tools, like two snap-on roll-around boxes stuffed with everything imaginable.

I don’t have a use for ‘em but I don’t want to just give ‘em away either. Where do I look to find what they’re worth and where to sell ‘em without a big hassle?
I’m in northern California and I have the tools in storage in central Arizona, so I don’t know if that would make a difference on what I could ask for them. I’m hoping that I don’t have to itemize EVERY piece there and I realize that I’d have to give some sort of accurate description of what I got.
I don’t have a lot of time to invest in trying to sell these, and it’d make it a lot easier if they sold by themselves!

What should I do and where do I look?
